Training and Professional Development
Training and Professional Development at IISS
The following are the training courses conducted
Somnologists
Somnology is the scientific study of sleep. It includes clinical study and treatment of sleep disorders and irregularities. Somnologists treat disorders related to somnology by employing various subjective as well as objective diagnostic tools to determine the nature of a sleep disorder or irregularity.
IISS is currently involved in training PhD students to become Somnologists. Just as a psychologist acts like a strong support to the psychiatrist, in the same way, a Somnologist assists a Sleep Specialist. The interdisciplinary nature of this field creates a foundation for students from multiple fields to be involved in the practices and principles of sleep medicine.
Some of the key roles of a Somnologist include:
- Understanding the neurobiology and function of sleep,
- Assessing the impact of reduced sleep across age groups,
- Discovering/improving treatments for sleep disorders,
- Investigating if sleep disorders are associated with the progression of other diseases and in what manner,
- Educating healthcare professionals and the general public about healthy sleep habits and sleep disorders, and
- Developing data and providing interventions and treatment for sleep disorders.
Sleep Technicians
Sleep Technicians are required to effectively conduct diagnostic as well as titration studies. They should be able to provide the sleep specialist with an accurate recordings of all the variables to be studied. IISS trains Sleep Technicians. To its credit, IISS has trained seven Sleep Technicians to date. Of these, five belong to rural areas of Nashik and Jawhar (Thane). In doing so, IISS is instrumental in providing much needed professionally-trained technicians in a field that is not as well understood as it should be.
Sleep Technicians perform comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis, and associated interventions. They are trained to perform Nocturnal Polysomnography (NPSG), diagnostic study and Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) titrations, Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). For night-time sleep studies, Sleep Technicians are expected to remain vigilant throughout the night and also accompany the patient for daytime studies, so as to guarantee the best outcomes. Additionally, all IISS Sleep Technicians are well-trained professionally and are responsible healthcare workers with a deep concern for patient safety, wellbeing, and patient confidentiality.
Certificate Course for Health Care Professional
In India, less than 1% of the current medical curriculum addresses sleep and disorders associated with it. Hence, the medical community, on the whole, is oblivious to the gravity of problems posed by sleep disorders. IISS recognizes this gap and aims to create awareness about and provide training for tacking sleep disorders. The typical Indian patient places an enormous amount of trust in his/her ‘‘Family Doctor’’. IISS believes that theseGeneral Practitioners are the key link that will create long-lasting and positive awareness among the general public about sleep disorders.
To reach- and to inculcate proper information about this novel branch of Medicine- to the General Practitioners, IISS is conducting courses to introduce Sleep Medicine.
